What Is Candida?
Candida is a type of yeast that is found in your body. Although classified in the same group as fungus, mildew, and mold, when the Candida in your body is in correct balance, it is not a harmful substance to you. It thrives in a moist and dark environment and is natural to the body. It can be found in the skin folds, in your mouth, digestive tract, and vagina. You may also find it in your ears, dental cavities, under the breasts, nails, or in the groin area.
Candida will not give you any problems, as long as the balance is present in the Candida, which means that it doesn’t lead to an overgrowth. If you do have an overgrowth of Candida, it can lead to abdominal bloating, chronic fatigue, and diarrhea, headaches, spotting in your menstrual cycle, skin infections, and even depression. Although Candida can be found in anyone, it is more common in people with weak immune systems, as well as babies. If you are prone to Candida overgrowth then prevention is extremely important to allow your body to balance out the growth of Candida before your infections reoccur.
When your immune system isn’t working to the best of its ability, it may become suppressed which leads to an overgrowth of yeast. This is because the toxins that the yeast produces can enter your blood stream through the colon wall, which infects other parts of your body then where it is usually located. This can happen if you use an antibiotic for any reason, or even steroid use can affect it. More commonly it is affected by the use of birth control pills, hormonal changes due to pregnancy and menopause, as well as menstruation, poor hygiene, stress, poor eating habits, or allergies.
Anti-fungal drugs help to keep it under control, as well as over the counter medication and prescription medication that consists of topical creams, probiotics, or oral drugs. However, if you have constant overgrowth of the Candida you may want to consider a more herbal remedy that can help it from reoccurring. There are alternative therapies such as immunotherapy, or increasing your overall vitamin intake which allows you to strengthen your immune system. Maintaining your healthy, eating right, exercising, and making sure to get all of the vitamins and nutrients your body needs is the best way to prevent Candida overgrowth. By boosting your immune system you are not only helping with this situation but with many other diseases and disorders that can affect your body if you aren’t as healthy as you should be.
There are some herbal remedies that are recommended such as lemon grass, Pau d’arco bark, and Calendula Officinalis which offer anti-bacterial properties that can remove the toxins that cause overgrowth. It also works together to restore the natural balance to your body so that your immune system works properly. Although with these natural herbs, you need to help your body along by avoiding foods that contain sugar, yeast, and alcohol. You should also keep your skin cool and dry, and avoid using antibiotics if at all possible.
