What Is Metabolism?
The bodily function that converts what you eat and drink into energy is known as our metabolism. Many people don’t realize the importance of this vital system until it begins to slowdown. This function in our body is responsible for many things such as maintaining our body temperature; ensuring new cells are created, repairing dead cells and the overall process of healing. This bodily function is working around the clock, even when you’re sleeping. When you begin to eat or drink something, this function begins to work in the background ensuring that everything you have consumed is broken down into the right components. The breakdown of food takes place with the help of enzymes released by the pancreas.
The broken down components of the meal you ate would be released into the bloodstream, so that the various extremes in your body gets the appropriate nutrients. If there is more than enough energy produced, it would be stored in the body for later use. In terms of the body’s metabolism, there are two general types that you should be aware of. The first type is known as the anabolic process, which takes small broken down molecules and forms larger components. The second type is the catabolic process where the large food molecules are broken down into smaller molecules for distribution.
The complete process that this function goes through is referred to as the metabolic process and it has its own rate, which tells us how efficiently it is performing within the body. The rate is sometimes known as the BMR or basal metabolic rate and this gives us an idea of how quickly the body is consuming the internal energy source while it’s resting. For people who have a high metabolic rate, the food they eat is processed and energy is used up very quickly. On the other hand, for people who have a low metabolic rate, it means that food to energy conversion is slower, which indicates that the person might be a little overweight as well.
In order to have a good metabolism, you need to be eating right and exercising regularly. People who don’t stay fit and active will realize the potential drawback in their metabolic rate. When you avoid eating right or doing exercise, you will realize that there are fewer calories being burned in the body, which directly slows down the body’s ability to convert food into energy. In order to boost your metabolic rate, you need to start exercising at least three times a week with the proper portions of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in your meal.
Generally, people will start to see a slowdown in metabolism after the age of thirty five. This is completely natural and is not a bad thing at all, as long as you are still staying fit by exercising. Males tend to have a higher metabolic rate than women, primarily due to the large amount of lean muscle mass. Similarly, people who have more body mass need to have a high rate, because the body needs a large dose of energy to get by everyday tasks. Practicing good eating habits and exercising is an excellent way to help boost your metabolism.
